Comics use pictures or a combination of words and pictures to tell a story—not necessarily about costumed super heroes and they sometimes not meant for children. “Comic zines” are perzines in a comic format.

Biscuits and Bacon

This is another collaboration between Stephen McClurg and Derek Ballard. It’s wordless comic, with each page being a single, thought-provoking picture. According to the artists, it’s a story about the creative process. Nice cardstock cover and high production values! (11pp – 1/4 size)

Bottletree Reader

This half comic/half lit zine contains works by Amethyst Vineyard, Stephen McClurg and Derek Ballard. There’s a multi-page comic, a single page comic, and several substantial poetry pieces. Great for a quick read, but there’s so much going on that you’ll discover something new each time you flip through it. It’s got a very nice quality cardstock cover, too! (12pp – 1/2 size)

Celso #3

It’s not necessary to have read issues 1 and 2 to get into this issue’s wild and  semi-coherent story: mute birthday boy Timmy and his deaf, wheelchair-bound Grandpa hit the city streets and meet a drunken crow and a homeless guy, and they all end up going on various journeys. And there’s a walrus, too.  Gorgeous art and writing. This reminds me a lot of The Maxx, but there’s definitely some manga influences. Celso is drawn and written by Celso in Colorado, with a color cover and B&W art inside. P.S. this comic ain’t for kids! 62pp – 1/2 size)

Celso #4

Another beautiful, funny and creepy issue of Celso! This issue has two main stories: one a wordless comic set to a musical soundtrack that you can listen to online (there’s no way to describe what it’s about without taking the fun out of it!), the other a wordy comic about what happens when your riding your bike with a bottle of Jim Beam in the basket and get stopped by a cop. There’s also a quite scholarly essay about Comic Books and Jung. (44pp – 1/2 size)

Heart Star

This is a one-shot comic by the prolific Christoph of Twenty-eight pages lovingly bound with twine. This is a lovely little story about a ghost with a broken heart who’s searching for a way to rest in peace. Like everything of Christoph’s, this is expertly produced. (26pp – 1/4 size)
